Mindfulness
Anxiety
According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, "Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally, and then I sometimes add, in the service of self-understanding and wisdom.” Mindfulness can help to calm the nervous system, regulate emotions, still the mind and increase insight.
As we focus on trauma or adverse life events during EMDR therapy, mindfulness helps to allow thoughts and sensations to come and go. Mindfulness also strengthens the observers mind. Through the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (body, feeling, mind, and physical and mental processes) we begin to see things as they really are. This practice helps us move through EMDR therapy with increased acceptance and awareness.
